Kew Gardens Festival Of Cinema launches ‘Optimism’ Campaign To Become An Annual Movie Showcase

FilmProjectorHC1512_X_th_C5

A local film festival is looking to turn into an annual event, but organizers need the public’s help to make it a reality.

The Kew Gardens Festival of Cinema is teaming up with Seed & Spark, a crowdfunding platform that focuses on film and film related projects, We Transfer, and Bow & Arrow Entertainment to participate in the “100 Days Of Optimism” rally and raise money to make the festival a yearly event.

The festival is returning to Kew Gardens on Aug. 3 through 12. The team at Kew Gardens Festival of Cinema is hoping to turn the festival into a World Class Film Festival, so they set up the crowd-funder on Seed and Spark to help make that goal a reality.

From March 21 to April 19, Kew Gardens Festival of Cinema is looking to gain 1,000 followers and raise $10,000 through the crowdfunder. The top 10 projects that reach their goal qualify for additional funding through Seed & Spark, We Transfer and Bow & Arrow Entertainment, which include an additional $9,000 in funding, $50,000 in grants and over $100,000 in marketing support.

The goal of the campaign is to get as many stories of hope, change, redemption and inspiration made. Those who donate to the campaign are eligible for perks ranging from social media shoutouts, festival swag, and All Access VIP Passes to the festival this summer.

For more information, visit www.KewGardensFestivalofCinema.orgClick here to donate to the crowdfunder.

Glendale School Site’s Roots Trace Back To A Popular Saloon & Hotel: Our Neighborhood, The Way It Was

Photo courtesy of the Queens Library Digital Archives

It’s hard for many Glendale residents to imagine, but the site of what is today Redeemer Lutheran School was once one of the neighborhood’s most popular drinking establishments.

Hofmann House Hotel opened in 1902 at the corner of Cooper Avenue and Lafayette Street (present-day 69th Place). It was operated by Sebastian Hofmann and his wife, Lena, who were Brooklyn residents. They purchased the site, which was previously farmland, for the tidy sum of $2,195 and erected the hotel there over the course of a year. Continue Reading ›

The Other Queens Subway To The World’s Fair: Our Neighborhood, The Way it Was

The World’s Fair Railroad running through an area that is now the Van Wyck Expressway.

Old Timer’s Note — We’re indebted this week to Joseph Raskin, one of the city’s foremost transit historians and former MTA director of governmental relations, for this week’s story about the World’s Fair IND, a special subway line in Queens during the 1939-40 World’s Fair.

Two World’s Fairs have been held on the grounds of what is now Flushing Meadows Corona Park, in 1939-40 and 1964-65. Given their continuing service past the park (and possibly helped by a catchy song advertising subway service to the 1964-65 Fair), most people will think that public transit access to the Fairs came only from the still-existing services to the north of the park, MTA New York City Transit’s Flushing Line along Roosevelt Avenue and the Long Island Rail Road’s Port Washington Line.

The Case for Christ is a 2017 American Christian drama film directed by Jon Gunn and written by Brian Bird. It is based on the true story that inspired the 1998 book of the same name by Lee Strobel. The film stars Mike Vogel, Erika Christensen, Faye Dunaway and Robert Forster and is about a journalist who looks to disprove his wife’s Christian faith. In 1980, atheist and award-winning investigative journalist Lee Strobel, using his journalistic and legal skills, attempts to disprove his wife Leslie’s newfound Christian faith. This causes problems within the marriage. After completing a thorough investigation for almost two years, Strobel finds the historical evidence for Jesus and a new faith in Christ.
