For some buyers, the X factor that seals the deal is a smile from a neighbor, some great wine at a cafe or the timely arrival of blossoms.

But in Douglas Manor, a waterside slice of northeastern Queens, what gets many to “yes” is the moment when the early-evening sky turns a hue of cotton candy and peach.“The sunsets here are fantastic,” said Alexandra McMenamy, 46, who should know. Before buying in Douglas Manor last year, she would regularly drive over from her semidetached home nearby, with her husband, Brian McMenamy, 49, to catch the light show over Little Neck Bay.

The couple are residents now, but the appeal of those sunset views hasn’t faded, Ms. McMenamy said: “I will be in my pajamas and Brian will say, ‘You’ve got to come to the corner and see this!’”

Getting a closer view wasn’t easy. The couple had been scoping out Douglas Manor properties since before they married in 2014. But the narrow point of land has only about 600 houses and little turnover, with many homes remaining in the same family for generations.

International Tennis Contest Returning To The Forest Hills West Side Tennis Club This Fall

The West Side Tennis Club at Forest Hills | Forest Hills Tennis: Historic Home of the US Open

FOREST HILLS, QUEENS — A Queens tennis stadium will be South Africa’s home turf at an upcoming international tennis event.

Forest Hills’ West Side Tennis Club, which hosted the U.S. Championships — now known as the U.S. Open — from 1923-1977, will host the Davis Cup from Sept. 18-19, a best-of-five match series between South Africa and Venezuela. The event was moved from Venezuela, as the relatively unvaccinated nation struggles against a delta-variant-fueled coronavirus surge.

The stadium last hosted the Davis Cup in 1959, but Jason Weir Smith, the stadium’s director of tennis — who himself is from South Africa — hopes that Queens won’t have to wait another 62 years to host another such tournament.

In recent decades, the historic tennis club has become somewhat overshadowed by the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows — the now home of the U.S. Open, where the Davis Cup was held in 1981.

That venue is hosting the national tennis championship the weekend before the Davis Cup, however, restoring the West Side Tennis Club as the go-to spot for the tournament.

“We could not be more excited to bring world class tennis back to the West Side Tennis Club, one of the most historic venues in American sports,” said West Side Tennis Club president Monika Jain in a news statement.

Tickets can be ordered by emailing RWalker@NewChapterMedia.com, according to the event site, but pricing information is not available online. Davis Cup representatives did not immediately respond to Patch’s inquiry about how much tickets cost.

The event will kick off at 11 a.m. on Sept. 18 with two best-of-three-set singles matches. The second day, also starting at 11 a.m., will feature the reverse two best-of-three-set singles matches and a best-of-three-set doubles match.

BBQ Eatery To Open In Forest Hills At Former Irish Pub Spot

Best BBQ in NYC: Definitive Guide to Barbecue Joints in New York City - Thrillist

FOREST HILLS, QUEENS — The site of a beloved, now-shuttered Irish eatery in Forest Hills will reopen in the upcoming months as a New York City-based barbecue chain.

Mighty Quinn’s BBQ is slated to open at 108-22 Queens Boulevard this fall, the eatery’s co-founder and co-CEO Micha Magid told Patch in a written statement.

“Our franchisee Michael Dolan has been searching for the perfect spot in Forest Hills and this corner location, right off the Austin Street dining strip, met everything we look for in a new restaurant,” he wrote, adding that the team is “looking forward to bringing our style of ‘que to the borough,” in what will be its first outpost in Queens.
