THE NOT SO FORGOTTEN TEA GARDEN IN FOREST HILLS GARDENS , NYC

At the back of the historic Forest Hills Inn at 1 Station Square lies a long-lost architectural gem, the Forest Hills Tea Garden. Opened in 1912 behind an ornate gate, the Tea Garden hosted everything from weddings to dinner dances. Though the remains of the tea garden remain today, most residents probably are unaware of its history. According to Michael Perlman, an author and historian who has been raising money and awareness to preserve the Tea Garden, the structure is just a shell of its former self, though it has the potential for restoration and revitalization. Perlman, a fifth-generation Forest Hills resident, spoke with Untapped New York about the history of this mostly forgotten but rich historic site.

Best Places to See Cherry Blossoms in Queens

Flushing Meadows Corona Park – Flushing

Take in a spring day at this expansive park and enjoy the cherry blossoms adorning the areas surrounding the Queens Museum and the Queens Theatre. For the most picturesque views, head west on the promenade toward the Unisphere.

Queens Botanical Garden Cherry Circle – Flushing

While the Queens Botanical Garden does not have special events for sakura, it does have the beautiful Cherry Circle, where you’ll find cherry blossom trees planted along a winding path and bursting with blooms each spring.

Rainey Park – Long Island City

Head to this sweet neighborhood hidden gem which comes to life in the spring with Okame cherry trees blossoming all along the promenade. The Kwanzan cherry trees on the lawns follow suit a bit later in the season. On Friday, April 22—during spring break—the park hosts Family Fun at Rainey Park featuring a puppet show, craft-making, and live music. FREE

Hunter’s Point South Park – Long Island City

If Yoshino cherry trees are your thing with their very pale pink cherry blossoms maturing into white clusters, this is the place for you. This special variety of cherry trees blooms around the park’s oval which also boasts stellar views of the Manhattan skyline. This little park packs in a lot of features including a central green, playgrounds, adult fitness equipment, a dog run, a bikeway, a waterside promenade, picnic terraces, and a basketball court.

APRIL 3RD… FOREST HILLS COMMUNITY HOUSE TO HOST UKRAINE FUNDRAISER

Keuka Kafe, a wine bar in Forest Hills, has organized a fundraising event for Ukrainian charities on Sunday, April 3 at the Church in the Gardens Community House, located at 15 Borage Place in Forest Hills Gardens.

The owners of Keuka Kafe are natives of Ukraine.

The event, titled New York Stands with Ukraine, will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. Tickets are $95 per person with all proceeds going to charity.

The afternoon will include food, wine, beer and music. Those wishing to purchase tickets are asked to subscribe to @newyorkstandswithukraine for additional information.

Sponsors include the Queens bakery Lady Baked, Lakewood Vineyards of Watkins Glen, NY, and Sveta, a Ukrainian restaurant in Manhattan’s West Village.

Keuja Kafe, located at 112-04 Queens Blvd., has hosted other fundraisers for Ukraine, and has links to more than a half-dozen charities that are carrying out Ukrainian relief operations on its website at keukakafe.com.
