Orange Is the New Black Shoots In Kew Gardens This Week
KEW GARDENS, QUEENS — The former Queens Detention Complex in Kew Gardens has once again transformed into the setting for hit Netflix series “Orange Is the New Black,” with the show filming new episodes in the neighborhood this week.Cast and crew for the prison-based series, whose sixth season is expected to debut this June, will take over the former detention center at 126 82nd Ave. on Monday and Tuesday, according to production flyers posted in the area.
The show will be shooting from 6 a.m. to midnight on both days, closing off parking along a portion 82nd Avenue and Queens Boulevard across from the detention center to make room for production trucks, according to a location manager for “Orange is the New Black”
“Orange Is the New Black,” created by Jenji Kohan, follows Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling) as the once-successful public relations executive serves a 15-month prison sentence for a transporting money to her former drug-dealing girlfriend in a crime committed years ago. Netflix has called the comedy-drama its most re-watched original series.
Viewers of the show, whose fifth season dropped last June, can expect at least two more seasons after Variety reported in February 2016 that Netflix had renewed Orange Is the New Black for seasons 5,6 and 7.
The show’s location manager declined to offer specifics on where in Kew Gardens the cast would film scenes this week or what season it would be for, but this isn’t the cast’s first time filming in the area.
The show shot episodes for its fifth season in the neighborhood in November 2016 and came back again this past August to shoot scenes for its upcoming sixth season, DNAinfo reported.
