First Look At The Queens Farm’s Unisphere-Shaped Corn Maze

The Queens parks commissioner calls it an “a-maize-ing tribute” to the iconic landmark in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park.

FLORAL PARK, QUEENS — The Queens County Farm Museum has released a sneak peek of its new, three-acre corn maze in the shape of Flushing Meadows-Corona Park’s iconic Unisphere, which opens this weekend.

The Unisphere-inspired Amazing Maize Maze makes its grand debut during the 37th Annual Queens County Fair, a two-day extravaganza featuring carnival rides and games, performances and the Queens Farm’s blue ribbon contest.

Commissioned for the New York World’s Fair of 1964-65 and designed by landscape architect Gilmore Glarke, the Unisphere has since become a beloved borough symbol.

“This a-maize-ing tribute pays homage to Queens’ roots and celebrates one of our city’s most iconic landmarks,” Queens Borough Commissioner for NYC Parks Michael Dockett said in a statement when the maze was announced in August.

NYC’s library card just got a Moviepass-sized upgrade. NYC library members can now access 33 cultural bastions throughout the city thanks to the new Culture Pass initiative, which seeks to give equal admission to the city’s finest attractions to all New Yorkers, regardless of economic circumstances.

And may we just say: It’s a pretty sweet deal, regardless of which borough you reside in. I can’t count the number of times I was too broke to visit the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens when I had to return a book at the Central Library next door. And the Whitney? Am I about to become, dare I say, fancy? Though rent is unmanageable and the MTA is devolving into a Mad Max-levels of chaos, it is nice to know that the city wants us to explore what it has to offer.    Continue Reading ›
