Staten Island boasts a plethora of stately old Victorians, huge parks, the Snug Harbor Cultural Center, and some fantastic modern architecture featured in its public buildings.

QUEENS NEW YORK REAL ESTATE

FOREST HILLS, QUEENS — A Forest Hills school was named the best private high school in Queens, according to a newly updated list of the best private schools in New York.

The Kew-Forest School, located on the border of Forest Hills and Kew Gardens, was ranked number 44 on Niche.com’s ranking of New York’s best private high schools for the 2021-2022 academic year. It is one of four Queens schools that earned a spot in the list’s top 100, and the only one in the borough to crack the list’s top 50.

The title is not new for many of the schools on the list, including the Kew-Forest School, which came in 39th on the school ranking site’s overall list for New York state last year.

queens new york real estate

FOREST HILLS, QUEENS — Forest Hills is the most accessible neighborhood in Queens for first-time home buyers, and among the city’s top-two most affordable areas to look for a first home overall, a new study shows.

The study, by the real estate website StreetEasy, defined “affordable” homes as those listings that people could buy if they earn the city’s median annual income of $70,406, and save 10 percent of their gross income for 10 years. 315 HOLLYWOOD AVENUE, DOUGLAS MANOR, NYC  $1,588,000 (718) .268.1045

LET’S TAKE A TOUR

For some buyers, the X factor that seals the deal is a smile from a neighbor, some great wine at a cafe or the timely arrival of blossoms.

But in Douglas Manor, a waterside slice of northeastern Queens, what gets many to “yes” is the moment when the early-evening sky turns a hue of cotton candy and peach.“The sunsets here are fantastic,” said Alexandra McMenamy, 46, who should know. Before buying in Douglas Manor last year, she would regularly drive over from her semidetached home nearby, with her husband, Brian McMenamy, 49, to catch the light show over Little Neck Bay.

The couple are residents now, but the appeal of those sunset views hasn’t faded, Ms. McMenamy said: “I will be in my pajamas and Brian will say, ‘You’ve got to come to the corner and see this!’”

Getting a closer view wasn’t easy. The couple had been scoping out Douglas Manor properties since before they married in 2014. But the narrow point of land has only about 600 houses and little turnover, with many homes remaining in the same family for generations.

Have You Made Your Reservations Yet?? NYC Restaurant Week Starts Monday Including 7 Yummy Spots In Forest Hills!

NYC Restaurant Week

FOREST HILLS, QUEENS — New York Restaurant Week is making a “super” return this month, the mayor announced on Monday, and a handful of eateries in Forest Hills have already signed up for the deal-filled event.

After a takeout-only run earlier this year, this summer’s five-week-long Restaurant Week will return in-person on July 19, and reservations are already open at 505 citywide eateries — including 7 spots in Forest Hills.

Although some Forest Hills eateries are represented in this year’s event, the vast majority of participating restaurants — 413 of the 505 — are found in Manhattan, with just 31 Queens spots on the list so far, though others might join ahead of the July 15 registration deadline.

Here are the Forest Hills restaurants participating so far:

For participating restaurants, this year’s deals include $21 lunches, $39 dinners, and a new $125 “Signature Dining Experience,” which includes three or more courses.

There will be even more deals for MasterCard holders, who will receive $10 of credit on each purchase of $39 or more, and who will be entered for the chance to win 200,000 airline miles with each NYC Restaurant Week meal.

“This is going to be amazing,” de Blasio said on Monday, describing this year’s event as “a wonderful, super restaurant week.”
The participating eateries include more than 40 types of cuisines in 75 neighborhoods, according to organizers NYC & Company.

The return of restaurant week comes as New York City continues its campaign to restart tourism in the city, which flagged during the coronavirus pandemic. Both the mayor and organizers said the extended restaurant week will add to the effort.

“Accompanied with vibrant open streets and rich cultural activity returning across the five boroughs, the options this summer are endless and the time to visit is now,” NYC & Company President Fred Dixon said.

Make a reservation or view the full list of participating restaurants at the Restaurant Week websiteSee all of the participating Queens eateries here.
