A little Inn Sight Into Old Forest Hills

One of the most historic sites in Forest Hills, the Forest Hills Inn at 1 Station Square, is celebrating its history with a new exhibition in its wood-paneled lobby.

The permanent “Inn-sight to Yesterday” display includes restored postcard prints reflecting on its 1912 through its conversion into a residence in 1967, as well as the history of Station Square and its connecting buildings including The Raleigh, The Marlboro, and LIRR station. Also featured in the display are matchbook covers, menus, ads, letters, and an account card.

“When you find old files, you are very surprised,” said George Hoban, president of the board of the Station Square Inn Apartments Corporation, who discovered a treasure trove of memorabilia in an abandoned attic. “When someone would book a hotel room back in the early 1950s, they would get a confirmation by mail, including a self-addressed postcard, where they would place their banking information. Forest Hills Gardens May Make Station Square Pedestrian-Only

FOREST HILLS, QUEENS — Station Square in Forest Hills could permanently close to traffic.

The Forest Hills Gardens Corporation is mulling over plans to pedestrianize Station Square following a restoration of the square’s historic brick roadway that will soon be complete.

The idea is already generating buzz among those who live in the residential enclave, but it is far from being set in stone.

 “Everything is on the table for now,” Matt Mandell, president of the Forest Hills Gardens Corporation’s board of directors, told Patch. “We’re not rushing into any decisions.”

The only certainty is that 71st (Continental) Avenue would remain open to traffic, no matter what happens to the rest of Station Square, Mandell said. Continue Reading ›

Station Square To Reopen In May, Restoration Of Brick Roadway Almost Complete

The restoration of the brick roadway at Station Square is nearly complete and the historic area is expected to reopen to traffic in May.

Forest Hills Gardens, and has been the site of numerous social activities since its inception some 100 years ago. In the early years, there were annual Fourth of July celebrations in Station Square, that featured “elaborate patriotic programs, parades, games and even a costume ball. ” These celebrations culminated in a huge Fourth of July gathering in 1917, during which Teddy Roosevelt gave his famed “100% American” speech.
