The first pink blooms of the season have begun, signaling winter’s end! Currently you can find the beautiful blooms at Flushing Meadows Corona Park.

And even earlier than we thought! Spotted this morning, the beautiful blooms can most certainly be seen in NYC as of March 8 in Queens—even earlier than last year’s first sighting in NYC on March 19th.

According to Central Park, “Okame cherry trees are the first cherry trees to blossom in spring, earlier than the more famous Yoshino and Kwanzan cherry trees.”

Though last year, the first cherry blossoms were observed at the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir in Central Park, this year, these trees can currently be seen in Flushing Meadows Corona Park.

We can only hope the trees in Central Park will bloom next!

The main cherry blossom blooms of Central Park are the Okame, Yoshino, and Kwanzan trees. As noted, the Okame are usually the first to bloom. Yet, perhaps the most striking are the Yoshino trees, which are located along the east side of the Reservoir and also on Cherry Hill. These 35 tress were gifted from Japan in 1912 and bloom in very light pink, almost white.

The trees usually bloom for about a week, and then drop their petals which leaves a beautiful natural confetti that is just as picturesque. That said, the season is short, so be sure to catch them while you can!

If you want to keep an eye out for some other spots, early trees also tend to bloom along the East River walkway on Roosevelt Island.

So even though the temperatures don’t feel like it’s spring, the blooming cherry blossoms are an exciting sign that the change of seasons is quickly approaching. You can even look forward to longer and lighter days as NYC’s first 7pm sunset of the year will be next week!

THE NOT SO FORGOTTEN TEA GARDEN IN FOREST HILLS GARDENS , NYC

QUEENS HOMES FOR SALE

At the back of the historic Forest Hills Inn at 1 Station Square lies a long-lost architectural gem, the Forest Hills Tea Garden. Opened in 1912 behind an ornate gate, the Tea Garden hosted everything from weddings to dinner dances. Though the remains of the tea garden remain today, most residents probably are unaware of its history. According to Michael Perlman, an author and historian who has been raising money and awareness to preserve the Tea Garden, the structure is just a shell of its former self, though it has the potential for restoration and revitalization. Perlman, a fifth-generation Forest Hills resident, spoke with Untapped New York about the history of this mostly forgotten but rich historic site.

Meet Our Newest Team Member.. David Cornejo!

queens new york real estate

The Forest Hills  community has undoubtedly influenced and impacted the course of my life. Since moving to the Forest Hills Gardens in 1998, I have built and fostered relationships with many members of the local community. My family has been engaged with the Forest Hills community since 1990 with the establishment of our family business, 5 Burro Cafe – a local Mexican restaurant.  Through my years of working at the restaurant with my family, I have truly come to understand the importance of community, philanthropy, and getting the job done with integrity.

In 2013, I attended Michigan State University and was a student in their Eli Broad School of Business. Although my visits back home were seldom, being back in the community was comforting and a great reminder as to how fortunate I was to grow up in such a beautiful community. MSU provided me with an incredible education, and an even more profound network. To this day, I continuedly communicate with former peers and friends, and contribute annually to my Program as an alumnus. Living in the Midwest for that period of time made me greatly appreciate my roots in New York and specifically Forest Hills. The wide range of cultures, cuisines, and architecture is unmatched.

Since graduating in 2017, I have made it a priority to travel around the world and enjoy all that life has to offer. I competitively trained Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in San Diego, California, from 2017-2019 while at the same time working for the US Navy. In 2019, I took the trip of a lifetime to South America, to immerse myself in a culture that I was part of , however, I had known nothing about. For 4 months I bounced around South America, beginning in Argentina, visiting family in Chile, then making my way to Uruguay, Peru, and ultimately Brazil. To me, nothing is more rewarding than learning about different cultures and viewing how other people live their lives. I am so fortunate to have been raised by a culturally diverse family- my mother, a Jewish second generation New Yorker, and my father a Chilean born immigrant, with a dream of coming to New York to make a life for himself and his family.

Finally, this experience and diversity has allowed me interact with people from all around the world. I now speak 3 languages conversationally – English, Spanish, and Hebrew. Also, my time spent in Brazil has ignited a desire in me to learn Portuguese, so I have been practicing since my return. Some

of my favorite hobbies include, eating delicious meals, staying physically active through sports and martial arts, listening to podcasts, and laughing with friends and family.

Forest Hills Ranked Best Area To Buy For 1st Time Home Buyers

queens new york real estate

FOREST HILLS, QUEENS — Forest Hills is the most accessible neighborhood in Queens for first-time home buyers, and among the city’s top-two most affordable areas to look for a first home overall, a new study shows.

The study, by the real estate website StreetEasy, defined “affordable” homes as those listings that people could buy if they earn the city’s median annual income of $70,406, and save 10 percent of their gross income for 10 years. By these metrics, affordable homes in NYC cost a median of $352,780, factoring in a 20 percent down payment and other maintenance fees, according to the study.

Where To Find Christmas Trees In 2020 In The Forest Hills Area

Best artificial Christmas trees of 2020 - Business Insider

At least 25 million real Christmas trees are sold each year across America, and currently, 350 million are growing in all 50 U.S. states. And despite these unprecedented times, the tree market is still up and running this holiday season. Christmas tree lots and choose-and-cut farms nationwide are taking precautions as the coronavirus pandemic worsens to ensure buyers can take home a tree with minimal risk to their family’s health and safety.

“We highly encourage growers to use these recommendations to develop strategies to protect their workers and customers,” the the National Christmas Tree Association wrote on its website this year, and “wholesale growers should share the recommendations for tree lots with their customers. Having a COVID-19 plan for your business is an imperative.”
